Building materials dust, conveyors and transport

Vision applications in cement, concrete and ceramics plants: conveyor zones, equipment traffic and PPE checks in dusty environments.

Cement plants, concrete batching plants and ceramics works combine heavy internal transport with extensive conveyor systems and high dust levels. Dust matters twice here: as a hazard and as an obstacle to detection itself.

Typical risks in this sector

Belt and bucket conveyor zones

Extensive continuous transport systems have many points where jams are cleared by hand.

Loader and truck movement

Loading and unloading happen amid constant movement of external vehicles whose drivers do not know the site.

Missing masks and hearing protection in dusty areas

Respiratory and hearing protection is required locally, and its absence surfaces only in periodic health checks.

Presence in bulk storage areas

Climbing onto a bulk material pile risks engulfment, and it is done when checking stock levels.

What the system detects

  • a person entering a conveyor working zone
  • a pedestrian approaching a loader or truck in the loading area
  • missing mask, hearing protection or helmet where required
  • presence in a bulk material storage area
  • smoke and ignition around installations

Dust as a boundary condition

Airborne dust lowers image contrast and is easily mistaken for smoke. Detection thresholds therefore have to be set separately for dusty areas rather than copied from the rest of the plant.

Dirty lenses are the other side of the same problem. A camera cleaning schedule becomes part of system maintenance, just like software reviews.

External drivers

A large share of yard traffic consists of haulage company vehicles whose drivers may be on site for the first time. They carry no tags, do not know the signage and often get out in places not intended for it.

Vision detection covers them exactly as it covers employees, because it requires nothing on the observed person. In this sector that is one of the main advantages over radio solutions.

Frequently asked questions

Does dust make detection impossible?

No, but it lowers effectiveness and requires threshold tuning. Areas with extreme dust are flagged in the audit as unsuitable.

How often must cameras be cleaned?

It depends on the area. This is established in the first weeks of operation, based on observed image degradation.

Will the system cover an outdoor storage yard?

Yes, given lighting or infrared cameras and a stable mounting point.
